Torridon News (January 2008)
Many of you will be aware that the Torridon Stores has been closed since the end of
2006. Donnie (London) Macdonald and his wife Morag ran the shop for more than 30 years
after Donnie took the shop over from his mother. They, and the shop, have been sorely
missed in the heart of Torridon and many visitors to the area during 2007 have enquired
after them both. I am pleased to report that they are both well and have sold the shop
and are enjoying a well-earned retirement. We send them both our thanks for so many
years of service to the area and best wishes for the future.
Jo Harris, a frequent visitor to Torridon, has bought the shop and has been granted planning permission to build a shop and café where the shop now stands. I know that many people in the area are very much looking forward to having a local shop again and a café will be much appreciated by both locals and visitors. It is hoped the new premises will be open in the summer.
Many of you will have heard that Torridon and district community put on a pantomime in December! The Wizard of Oz was more than a pantomime it was an example of a community working together and producing something fantastic. Over 50 local people were involved in the show and the talent and generosity they all displayed was unforgettable. A big thank you to everyone who took part and to the Scottish Arts Council for their financial support. If you were not lucky enough to have seen the show there are 100 DVD's of it out there somewhere so do try to borrow one and see for yourself what talent we have here. Essential Scottish Opera are coming to Torridon on Tuesday 5th February at 7.30pm. Phone 01445 791488 for tickets.
The Arts and Culture Group are putting together an exciting programme for 2008. The Edinburgh String Quartet will be with us again on March 15th. Other events will be listed on the hall website.
Now that planning consent has been obtained for the community hall extension we are in the process of applying to The Big Lottery for project funding. This application is now at the second stage and work is being done to secure the funding that will enable us to purchase the extra land for the car park from the National Trust and to put out the plans for tenders.
The extension committee would like to invite everyone in the Torridon and District community to come to an open meeting in the hall where they will be able to see the progress that has been made on the project and find out more about the proposed new facilities.
Hall Extension Open Meeting
